Vaccination for Hjalmar and Elsa

Lyme disease (or Borrelia, in Swedish) is a tick-born disease that is much feared in the neighborhood of Stockholm where it is endemic. Hjalmar and Elsa got their first shots against this disease this summer. The doctor was very nice and joked with them, and they did not complain at all. Guldstjärnor till barnen!

Elsas apa fick också vara med och fick också en spruta. Det var inte så farligt, tyckte han. Det var värre att hålla på att bli kvarglömd på Mörby C tunnelbanestation.

Lyme disease is caused by bacteria belonging to the genus Borrelia and transmitted to humans by the bite of infected ticks. There really is no vaccine to protect yourself from Lyme disease, but if you remove the tick within 24 hours from it biting you, the risk of becoming infected is minimal. In most cases, the infection and its symptoms are eliminated by antibiotics, especially if the illness is treated early. Tick-borne encephalitis (TBE), on the other hand, is a viral infectious disease involving the central nervous system, is incurable once manifested, and can cause long lasting problems. The virus is instantly transmitted through the tick's saliva. TBA vaccine is very effective and available in some disease endemic areas, such as the Stockholm archipelago area. So, even though they got the shots, make sure to check the kids for ticks every night :-)
